Amazon.com Review
No workshop or tool box is complete without at least one dependable and powerful cordless drill/driver. Skil's 2887-05, 3/8-inch keyless chuck drill/driver has a two-speed gear box that allows the user to shift from high speed drilling to high torque for driving screws or bolts. The gear change lever is located on top of the tool housing above the two-finger variable speed trigger. The forward/reverse switch on this drill is located just above the trigger so that you can switch direction without changing your grip, and there is a forward/reverse indicator light on top of the housing. There is a built-in bit storage compartment on top of the housing. Especially handy is the built-in bit index No more guessing at which bit is needed for which screw. Simply place a screw in the index and you'll find the bit size you will need. The 2887-05 also comes with a removable side handle for added two-fisted leverage when drilling or driving on high torque.

The drill/driver is powered by an 18-volt Ni-Cad battery which gives the user superior power and extended battery life. The battery slides easily onto the bottom of the tool giving the drill/driver optimum balance. Included with the 2587-05 is an extra battery, a one-hour charger and carrying case. --C. 1 out of 5 stars drill is good, batteries are pathetic   January 1, 2009
NigelDH (nr Ithaca, NY)
I got this drill in a combo pack in Dec 2006 with the circular saw, reciprocating saw and light. The battery packs have pathetic life on the saws.
The battery packs also barely hold their charge after a year.
The drill is good. Personally I would now go for the Ryobi LiON or the Ryobi sets which can also be used with LiON batteries.

Unlike many cordless drills, the contacts in the drill and saws are easy to get to. So attaching an external 18V DC power source should be easy.
I might see if I can attach an external battery pack like I did with my Bosch Bulldog.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!   December 31, 2008
Pecos Bill (Gaithersburg, MD United States)
I just bought a townhouse. Anyone who owns their own place needs their own cordless drill/driver. I chose this one over the other brands for no particular reason. I like red. I was encouraged when the guys bringing in the new washer/dryer had this exact drill and it had obviously seen a lot of wear and tear. I figured if they thought it was good enough for work, it's probably good enough for home!

I have now put up curtain rods on 7 windows and 2 glass doors, installed a washing machine, assembled a couple pieces of furniture, installed some closet rods and I forget what else. I'm tired but the drill is still on its first battery charge. I picked up the Skil 84-piece bit set to go with it and have had drills and bits for everything, including wonky do-it-yourself furniture (threw away the hex key, used the cordless drill and hex bits instead).

It seems like a really nice drill and the fact that it comes with 2 batteries is nice. Get this and a good drilling and driving set to go with it and you'll be well on your way to do-it-yourselfville.

5 out of 5 stars Love It   November 22, 2008
Nunya (Nashua, NH)
Plenty of torque, battery carries a good charge and since it comes with a second battery, I simply switch out the batteries at the end of each use. The battery charger hanges nicely on wall making for easy change outs and unlike other bit storage grips I've used the one on this drill actually holds the bit securely when not in use.

I'm a very satisfied customer and this is well worth the price.

3 out of 5 stars somehat disappointing   November 19, 2008

The batteries don't seem to hold a charge very well/long. It appears in less than a week (with NO use) the batteies are a third drained.

Whe I first purchased this drill I loved it. Have had this drill for about 1 year now and the batteries do not hold a charge. I work in the crane industry and I need a cordless drill with some balls that can drill more than 1 hole when im working aloft.
